Some welcome news for anyone heading to Ambergris Caye this winter: the sargassum is finally easing. San Pedro Town Council says the seaweed is beginning to clear from the island's beaches, and in some areas the sand has started to come back on its own, as reported by The San Pedro Sun.

A long season of cleanup

It has been a big job. Council crews have been out every day for 38 weeks, and in some weeks they hauled away as much as 150 tons of sargassum. This is the second year in a row the town has spent about 38 weeks dealing with the seaweed, with only short breaks.

Beachfront businesses and property owners have done their share too, keeping their own stretches of sand clear. The council credits recent weather with helping turn things around.

What comes next

With conditions improving, the council hopes to restart its Beach Restoration Program, which was put on hold during the cleanup. The program aims to help the beaches recover from months of erosion and cleanup work, and to make them better able to handle future seaweed.

At the national level, the Government of Belize is seeking financing to tackle sargassum more seriously, and the council is working on longer-term planning with local businesses and the Belize Tourism Board.

The council is also honest that this isn't over for good. Another large wave of sargassum could undo the progress quickly, so conditions can still change from week to week.

Planning your beach days

For visitors, this is a good moment to be on the island. A few tips:

  • Stay flexible. Beach conditions on Ambergris Caye can change, so have more than one beach in mind.
  • Explore beyond town. North of the bridge you'll find quieter stretches of beach and the drive out to Secret Beach.
  • Help keep it clean. The council has asked for wider support for the people doing this work. Packing out your own trash is an easy way to help.

Get around by golf cart
