A first-timer's guide to San Pedro, Belize

First trip to San Pedro? The essentials — getting to the island, getting around by cart, what to pack, and how to make the most of Ambergris Caye.

A first-timer's guide to San Pedro, Belize

San Pedro, on the island of Ambergris Caye, is Belize's most popular beach town — reef diving, beach bars, and that easy island pace. If it's your first visit, a little planning makes it a breeze.

Getting to the island

You can't drive to Ambergris Caye — it's an island. From the international airport near Belize City, most visitors either hop a short 15-minute flight to the San Pedro airstrip (Tropic Air or Maya Island Air) or take the water taxi across. Either way, once you land, a golf cart is how you'll get around.

Getting around once you're here

Cars are rare in San Pedro; the island runs on golf carts. Renting one gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. J&H meets you right at the airstrip or the water-taxi terminal with your cart, so there's no taxi to your hotel and no rental-office stop — see how our airport delivery works.

What to pack

  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat — the sun is strong

  • Water shoes for rocky spots and the boat docks

  • A light rain layer in the wetter months

  • Cash in small bills for tips and beach bars

Make the most of it

Spend a day exploring north of the bridge, including Secret Beach, book a reef snorkel or dive trip, and leave time to just cruise the beach road at sunset. When you're ready, book your cart and we'll take care of the rest.
